How To Style: Warrior Cut

The warrior cut is having a moment, and if you've recently gone for this bold, structured style, you already know it commands attention. But rocking a warrior cut isn't just about the haircut itself. It's about understanding how to style, maintain, and wear it with intention. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a Warrior Cut?

The warrior cut is a sharp, heavily textured hairstyle characterised by short-medium lengths on top with close-cropped or faded sides. Think flowing, textured locks with either a modern matte finish or a classic wet finish, with clean edges that frame the face. The most iconic ‘warrior cut’ example is undoubtedly Brad Pitt’s hair in Fight Club, with it being one of the most requested styles in barber history.

With this being such an iconic cut, any barber worth their salt will be able to produce this look with a reference picture; you’ll just have to explain what elements you want to tailor if you want to make it unique.

The Styling

Once you’ve left the barbershop, and it’s up to you to maintain the style every day, you need to make sure you’re keeping texture front of mind. The foundation of long-lasting texture comes from your pre-styler, and for this, nothing comes close to the Dapper Dan Sea Salt Spray. A few sprays into damp or towel-dried hair, then blow-dried, will give not just the separation you need for maximum texture, but also the hold to back it up.

After the pre-styling, there are lots of options for finishing products, but our recommendation for a modern natural finish would be the Dapper Dan Matt Paste. The Paste brings the perfect level of hold and finish to keep hair perfectly styled, and is also pliable enough to make styling quick and easy. On the other hand, if you were looking for a more retro/Y2K finish, the Deluxe Pomade is a no-brainer. The Pomade offers a wet finish, but thanks to its long-lasting hold, you can tailor the amount of product you need (and therefore the finish), even in thicker hair.

When applying the finishing product, make sure you start with just a small amount (pea-sized) and work your way up. With properly crafted, strong-hold products, just a small amount is enough to keep hair perfectly in place, so don’t make the rookie mistake of using half a tub in one go.

What about the sides?

The sides are the element of a warrior cut that you can customise to suit your personal style, with each option bringing something different to the iconic look.

Naturally, there’s the classic that most resembles the Brad Pitt hairstyle, keeping the sides short and choppy, but not overly refined with a modern taper or fade. This is great for emphasising texture all around (and for maintenance), and it’s the option you can never really go wrong with.

Alternatively, there’s leaning more into the modern style with a taper, burst fade, or classic fade. All of these styles bring a sharpness to the look, so if you’re after something cleaner with your hair, this is a great option.

Lastly, the most standout, but divisive path you could explore is with a mullet. Standout, absolutely, maximising texture, of course; but maintenance can become tricky. A new iteration we’ve seen crop up in recent years, this way of styling a warrior cut blends the benefits of the classic choppy sides and the modern fades, but thanks to the added length at the back, if you’re not planning on regular visits to the barbershop, the look can easily drift into overgrown, so beware.
