Which Styling Tin is right for you?

With versatile Clays, Pomades and Pastes, it can be tricky to choose the perfect product, especially if your barber isn’t on hand to guide you to the right choice. So to help with this, we’ve broken down our styling tins to make sure bad hair days are a thing of the past.

1. Super Hold Clay

Dapper Dan Super Hold Clay

First off, we have our Super Hold Clay. One of the newer additions to the Dapper Dan range, the Super Hold Clay has maximum strength and grip, with a super dry ‘ultra matte’ finish. This means that for natural finish styles looking to create texture and separation, this is the obvious choice. This being the case, short crops and messy fringes are a match made in heaven for the product. With the product’s superb strength, you only need a small amount to last all day, but unlike the cheap clays we see men suffer with, the Super Hold Clay remains soft, pliable, and water-based to go in and wash out without a fuss.

2. Deluxe Pomade

Dapper Dan Deluxe Pomade

When it comes to versatile wet finish looks, the Deluxe Pomade is in a league of its own. Functioning a lot like a high-end gel, the Deluxe Pomade allows you to tailor the wetness of your style with the amount of product you use, allowing for both natural shine styles and full-on classic wet styles. This being the case, the Pomade is especially flexible, but it best complements slick backs, tight curls, side partings, and medium-length layers. Not to mention, the water-based formulation means you won’t get buildup from being unable to wash the product out, to ensure your scalp stays healthy.

3. Matt Paste

Dapper Dan Matt Paste

Whilst the Deluxe Pomade is super versatile, nothing comes close in terms of flexibility to the Matt Paste. The OG Dapper Dan product took years to develop into what it is today, the most versatile matt styler on the market. Its high hold and low shine offering means there’s almost no style it can’t achieve; however, it excels at quiffs, medium length styles, mod cuts, and textured fringes that are looking for a natural matte finish. The only style we wouldn’t recommend the Matt Paste for is wet or glossy classics, like pompadours and jelly rolls.

4. Heavy Hold Pomade

When it comes to timeless classics, with an authentic glossy finish, the Heavy Hold Pomade is king. Oil-based hold and shine, this is the go-to for vintage hairstyles. It both performs all day, but with its special oil-based formulation, can also be restyled and recombed throughout the day to ensure no amount of wind or movement prevents from achieving pristine style. This means the product is the perfect partner for slick backs, pompadours, and side partings. However, crucially, unlike the pomades of the past (or the inferior ones of today), the Heavy Hold Pomade is petrolatum-free, which means that whilst it’s oil-based, it can still wash out without difficulty.

5. Matt Clay

Last, but certainly not least, the Matt Clay is another brilliant matt finish option. With the high performance you’d expect from a clay, packed with the smooth pliability of a paste, the Matt Clay juggles performance and feel to make styling easy and consistent. With its strong grip and hold, the Matt Clay shines most with messy styles, which, thanks to its performance-first formulation, can be restyled and touched-up throughout the day without leaving hair fluffy or flat.
